Notably, at least 65 people lost vision in an eye after contracting a severe infection after undergoing free cataract surgeries at a private hospital located at Juran Chapra locality of Muzaffarpur in Bihar between 22 to 27 November. The victims developed a severe eye infection.

A team has been constituted for the probe, said Pranav Kumar, District Magistrate, Muzaffarpur.

According to the reports, eye specialist ND Sahu performed the surgeries in the free medical camp organized by the hospital who did not have any experience in the surgery. The matter came into light when several patients complained of pain in the eyes after the operations, and the hospital administration gave them pain killer injections.

“Cases of eye infection have come to our knowledge. We have already constituted a team headed by the blindness control officer of the district to investigate the matter,” said Vinay Kumar Sharma, Civil Surgeon, Muzaffarpur.

The team has inspected the hospital and operation theatre which was used for the surgery. Several aspects of hygiene were impaired as a result of its failure, said Sharma adding, “The team has also recommended for cancellation of Sahu’s license. We will also take action against the hospital as well.”

Dr. Subhash P, a member of the probe team, said that 65 patients had surgery on 22 November at the hospital. So far, we have encountered 13 situations in which patients’ eyes have been removed or are being treated, he said.
