China stops publishing daily Covid data as leaked document suggests 25 crore fresh cases in 20 days

JNS: China may have seen 248 million people, or nearly 17.65 percent of the total population, contract COVID-19 during the first 20 days of December, a leaked document revealed.

According to estimates from the government’s top health authority, nearly 37 million people in China may have been infected with COVID-19 on a single day this week, reported different media.

In a population with low levels of natural immunity, Beijing’s swift dismantling of COVID Zero restrictions has led to the unrestrained spread of the highly contagious omicron variants. According to the agency’s estimates, a news website reported that more than half of the population of Sichuan province, located in southwestern China, and Beijing had been infected.

According to an analysis, chief economist at data consultancy MetroDataTech Chen Qin predicts the current wave in China will be reached its peak between the middle of December and the end of January in most cities.

Meanwhile, China has stopped publishing daily COVID data after a leaked document revealed 25 crore new cases in just 20 days, following the ‘zero-covid policy’ diluted in this month’s first week. The leaked document, 24.8 crore people, or 17.65 percent of China’s population, were infected with Covid-19 between December 1 and December 20. Following a massive increase in COVID cases, China’s National Health Commission has decided not to publish daily Covid data.

China’s hospitals and mortuaries are overcrowded as Covid cases spread across the country, with experts predicting 20 lakh COVID deaths by 2023. China is struggling to keep up with the massive increase in COVID-19 cases, causing overcrowding in ICUs and crematoriums.

The current COVID outbreak is driven by the highly infectious BF.7 variant, which poses a significant risk to the country.

According to reports, the country may take several months to recover from the tsunami of infections that has swept through major cities.
