Govt. nod for auction of emerald mines in Jharkhand’s Ghatshila

JNS: Jharkhand government given its nod to auction Emerald (Panna) Mines located at Ghatshila. Government is at work; will auction the mines very shortly, said an official.

On the directive of Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the Emerald Mines will be auctioned. These mines have not been auctioned yet; they will be done at the earliest through the G-4 auction process, stated in a state government’s communiqué.

The state government aims to complete the process of auctioning off Emerald Mines located at Ghatshila in the next two months, it said.

The state government envisions curbing illegal mining while promoting development activities and generating revenue in the state. This auction process will generate employment for thousands of unemployed, it stated.

Notably, as per the record, there is a stock of 11 thousand kilograms of Emerald in Ghatshila.

It also stated that closed Surda Mines of Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) located at Surda in Ghatshila will also be started soon. The state government will renew the mining lease and send it for clearance to the Central Government; the mining process can be resumed after getting the environmental clearance, said an official.

Recently, Ghatshila MLA Ramdas Soren met Secretary, Department of Mines and Geology Pooja Singhal on the directive of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and hold a healthy discussion about starting the closed mines of HCL. Hindustan Copper Limited is closed since 31 March 2020; the state government will renew the mining lease of HCL and, within 15 days send it to the Government of India for environmental Clearance II, he said.

“ Mining work will be resumed only after getting the required clearance from there. The government believes that it will generate employment opportunities for thousands of people living there,” he added.
