Joe Biden wins US presidential election; Kamala Harris elected as Vice President
JNS: Joseph R Biden Jr (Democrat Candidate) won the US Presidential election by defeating Donald Trump on Saturday. Biden, 77-year-old former US vice president will be the 46 US President; the election was held on 3 November 2020.
Biden exceeded 270 elections by overturning Pennsylvania’s battlefield, becomes the oldest person elected president.
Biden served as vice president under former President Barack Obama before becoming a Democratic presidential candidate. He is also the longest-serving senator of Delaware.
In a brief statement, Biden called for healing and unity. With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation, he said. “It’s time for America to unite and to heal. We are the United States of America. And there’s nothing we cannot do, if we do it together,” reported NY Times.
Senator Kamala Harris, 56, of Indian descent, became America’s first elected woman vice president. She would be the first Indian-born nation, the first Black and the country’s first African American vice president.
On 20 January, Biden and Harris will be sworn into the country’s presidency and vice-president.
President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Joe Biden; tweeted, “My sincere felicitations to Joseph R. Biden on his election as President of the United States of America and @KamalaHarris, as Vice President. I wish @JoeBiden a successful tenure and look forward to working with him to further strengthen India-US relations.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Biden and Harris on their election victories. “Heartiest congratulations @KamalaHarris! Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans. I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership,” tweeted PM Modi.
“Congratulations to my friends, @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris — our next President and Vice President of the United States,” tweeted Barack Obama former US President.
