Over dozens of COVID-19 patients die in Maharashtra hospital fire

JNS: Over a dozen of coronavirus patients died in a fire at a hospital at Virar in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. Around 3 am, a fire broke out in the ICU ward on the second floor of Vijay Vallabh Hospital, said an official.

After the stiff struggle of fire brigades and fire-fighters, the fire got controlled at around 5.30 in the morning. The fire claimed 13 lives while 4 were rescued from the ICU ward and shifted to another hospital, a hospital authority said.

According to the media reports, around 90 patients, including 17 in the ICU ward, were admitted to the hospital at the time of the incident.

A statement released by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s office said that the cause of the fire would be investigated properly.

“CM also directed the administration to immediately inquire whether the fire safety was adequate and whether it was a private hospital,” it said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolence at the loss of lives due to the fire in a hospital in Maharashtra.

PM has approved an ex-gratia of  2 lakh rupees each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund PMNRF for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the hospital fire in Virar, Maharashtra. Rs 50 thousand will be given to those seriously injured, it said in a PMO tweet.
