Vedanta-Electrosteel opens Mushroom Production Unit to Empower Women

Bokaro: Aiming to empower women ESL Steel Limited, a Vedanta Group Company, has launched a Mushroom Production Unit, run by women SHG, here on Friday. The unit was inaugurated by Pankaj Malhan, CEO ESL in the presence of Anita Kerketta, District Program Manager, Jharkhand State Livelihood Society.

Our motto is to empower women so that they can earn their livelihood and become independent through Project JIVIKA in association with Drishtee Foundation, informed ESL Public Relations official.

Under the initiative, 30 SHG mushroom producing beneficiaries will be involved initially and this number will gradually rise and another 70 SHG are planned who will be the primary customers of the spawn unit producers, said the official.

Speaking on the occasion Malhan said, the Mushroom Production Unit will help the SHG to work and grow together as one unit. The entire project would be run by women to make them self-sufficient.

“This is a progressive step in making the women independent and confident enough to run their families. ESL is proud to make rapid progress towards community development and shall continue to do so,” he added.

The spawn production unit concept is based on the idea of making women entrepreneurs by producing spawn for the mushroom cultivators. The unit includes making of spawn using several raw materials under the watchful eyes of women already trained by mushroom experts.

This is yet another initiative by ESL towards the community and its well-being. The Mushroom Production Unit is a step in the right direction as it enables women to lead a more respectable life and have a secure future. After getting trained by experts, they have already gained knowledge and completed the first round of spawn production, said Anita Kerketta, District Program Manager, Jharkhand State Livelihood Society.

“ESL has always shown compassion towards women and I wish that this new project proves to be as fruitful as the previous ones,” she added.

Besides others CPO, S. Venkataraman, Head, Community Relations  Ashish Ranjan, Stakeholder Management, Sanjay Sinha, Nidhi Nischal (YP Skill), Sitaram Mahto (Ex – Mukhiya, Siyaljori), Satrudhan Mahto (WARD Member), Manish, Asmita and team members of the Drishtee Foundation along with SHG members were present on the occasion.
