Gen-Z Leads the Charge Against Nepal Government Suppression
Army Deployed, Curfew Imposed to Control Unrest in Nepal
JNS: Nepal is witnessing a wave of unrest as young protesters, collectively called the Gen-Z (Generation Z) protest, take to the streets of major cities, including the capital Kathmandu, in response to the government’s ban on popular social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
What began as peaceful demonstrations quickly escalated into violent clashes with police and security forces, leaving at least 14 people dead and dozens injured. The youth-led agitation reflects not only anger over digital restrictions but also growing frustration over government corruption and suppression of free expression.
In Kathmandu, protesters reportedly defied curfew orders, entering restricted zones near Parliament. Tensions peaked in New Baneshwor, where one protester was shot and later died while receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, according to The Himalayan Times. The identities of several injured protesters remain unknown.
Meanwhile, in Damak, Jhapa, demonstrators marched from Damak Chowk toward the municipal office, setting multiple motorcycles ablaze and burning an effigy of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Police used rubber bullets to control the crowd, injuring several protesters in the process.

Journalists covering the unrest were also caught in the crossfire. Dipendra Dhungana of Naya Patrika, Umesh Karki of Nepal Press, and Shyam Shrestha of Kantipur Television sustained injuries from rubber bullets and are being treated at Civil Hospital.
The protests stem from the government’s sudden restrictions on social media, widely used by Nepal’s youth for communication, activism, and entertainment. Demonstrators argue that the ban is a deliberate attempt to silence dissent while ignoring long-standing corruption issues.
With the situation intensifying, the Nepalese army has been deployed, and a strict curfew is in effect across affected areas. The world watches as Nepal confronts one of its most significant youth-led uprisings in recent years.
