Guwahati: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck Assam on Sunday, centered just 14 kilometers east of Udalguri town at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Strong tremors were widely felt across Assam’s capital, Guwahati, as well as in neighboring North Bengal and Bhutan, sending waves of concern through the region.

Fortunately, no casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took to X (formerly Twitter), offering prayers for public safety and urging residents to stay vigilant in the aftermath of the tremor.

This seismic event comes barely days after a milder 3.5 magnitude earthquake rattled Sonitpur district on September 2, raising questions about heightened tectonic activity in the region.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation to ensure safety and provide updates as necessary. Residents are advised to follow precautionary measures and remain alert for any aftershocks.
