Islamabad/Kabul: Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire after days of deadly border clashes that killed dozens and heightened regional tensions.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the truce, effective from 6 pm local time, would last until Friday, adding that both sides have pledged to “make sincere efforts through dialogue” to reach a peaceful solution to their long-standing disputes.
The ceasefire follows the deadliest confrontation between the two nations since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Fighting erupted last week after a series of explosions in Kabul prompted the Taliban to launch an offensive near the southern border, sparking retaliatory fire from Pakistan.

Tensions have simmered over Islamabad’s accusation that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operates from Afghan soil — a claim the Taliban government denies.
The flare-up coincides with Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India, during which he remarked, “Certain groups in Pakistan are trying to stir up unrest.”
Amid strained relations, Kabul reportedly denied entry to Pakistan’s defence minister, ISI chief, and two senior military officials — rejecting three visa requests in as many days. Pakistan subsequently suspended all diplomatic and defence-level engagements with Afghanistan.
Islamabad has sought mediation from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, both of which have called for restraint and dialogue. “For God’s sake, stop Afghans from fighting,” Pakistani officials were quoted telling their Saudi counterparts.
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan recently inked a mutual defence pact, while Qatar’s Foreign Ministry urged both sides to pursue diplomacy.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump also offered to mediate the conflict, claiming he has “solved eight wars” and could help broker peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Iran, too, expressed readiness to assist in easing tensions between the two “neighbouring and Muslim nations.”
