Ranchi: As Jharkhand marks 25 years of its formation on November 15, 2025, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) has emerged as one of the state’s strongest partners in its story of growth, resilience, and transformation. From powering India’s energy grid to uplifting rural communities, CCL’s contribution to Jharkhand’s development has been both deep and defining.
A subsidiary of Coal India Limited, CCL is the state’s largest coal producer and a major contributor to Jharkhand’s revenue. But its impact goes far beyond mining. Over the past two decades, the PSU has quietly shaped the state’s social, economic, and human development landscape through wide-ranging CSR interventions.
₹80 Crore CSR Push in 2024–25
In FY 2024–25, CCL spent around ₹80 crore on education, healthcare, nutrition, livelihoods, rural development, and sports. Notably, 80% of this was utilized within a 25-km radius of its operational areas, reaffirming its commitment to the people living around its mines.
Education First: Big Push to Youth Empowerment
Believing that a state’s real strength lies in its youth, CCL has invested heavily in education:
-
A ₹65-crore, 5,000-seat state-level library is under construction at Ranchi University — set to become a hub for research, competitive exam preparation, and academic excellence.
-
Under ‘Project Digital Vidya,’ smart classrooms and computer labs have been rolled out in 193 government schools across eight districts.
-
Flagship initiatives ‘CCL Ke Lal’ and ‘CCL Ki Ladli’ continue to change young lives. Hundreds of underprivileged students have cracked IIT, NIT, and other premier engineering institutes through these free residential coaching programs.
Healthcare Access for All
To strengthen healthcare in underserved districts, CCL has taken several innovative steps:
-
A centralized kitchen with the Akshaya Patra Foundation is coming up in Ramgarh to supply 50,000 midday meals daily.
-
A modular operation theatre at Hazaribagh Medical College is enabling free surgeries for thousands of patients.
-
Through the Nikshay Mitra initiative, the company supports TB patients in Latehar and Chatra with nutrition and counseling.
-
Regular health camps, nutrition kit distribution, and elderly care programs like Multi-Activity Center (MACE) are ensuring long-term social security.
Boost to Tribal and Rural Sports Talent
Jharkhand has always been rich in sporting talent — and CCL has helped nurture it.
Through JSSPS Sports Academy in Khelgaon, hundreds of cadets, mostly from SC/ST and OBC communities, receive free training, schooling, accommodation, and nutrition. Many have gone on to bag national and international medals, bringing pride to the state.
Skills & Livelihoods: Making Youth Self-Reliant
CCL has initiated multiple skilling projects, including:
-
Plastic engineering and loader operator training
-
Natural dyeing and handloom weaving
-
E-rickshaw distribution in collaboration with CIPET
These programs have empowered thousands of rural youth and women to achieve economic independence.
Greener Mines, Greener Jharkhand
Environmental protection remains at the core of CCL’s operations. Dust control, mine-water conservation, aquaculture projects, and waste management are standard practice across mining zones.
The company’s Green Campaign, with around 1 crore saplings, is helping restore Jharkhand’s green cover.
A Partner in Progress
As Jharkhand steps confidently into its next 25 years, CCL continues to stand as a key pillar in the state’s development journey — not just as a mining giant, but as a committed partner in building a stronger, smarter, more inclusive Jharkhand.
