Kolkata: A moderate earthquake shook Kolkata and several adjoining areas on Friday afternoon, triggering panic among residents as tremors were felt across the city.

The quake struck at around 1:22 pm IST and measured between 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale, according to preliminary seismic readings. The epicentre was reported to be in southwestern Bangladesh, close to the West Bengal border, which led to noticeable shaking in Kolkata and nearby districts.

People across residential and commercial areas reported buildings swaying, ceiling fans trembling and furniture shifting briefly. Many office-goers and residents quickly stepped out of high-rise buildings and homes as a precaution, gathering in open spaces until the tremors subsided.

Social media videos showed people evacuating offices and apartment complexes moments after the shaking began. Several residents described the tremor as sudden and strong, though it lasted only a few seconds.

As of now, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or casualties in Kolkata. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to remain calm and stay alert for possible aftershocks.

Eastern India occasionally experiences tremors originating in neighbouring regions due to tectonic activity, and Friday’s quake once again served as a reminder of the area’s seismic sensitivity.
