Patna: A new chapter may be unfolding in Bihar’s political landscape as Nishant Kumar, the son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, formally joined the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) on Sunday, marking his official entry into active politics.

Nishant enrolled as a primary member of the party during a special event at the JD(U) headquarters in Patna, attended by several senior leaders and party workers. Key figures present at the ceremony included Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Sanjay Jha, and Shravan Kumar.

Interestingly, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar himself did not attend the programme that marked his son’s political debut—an absence that has triggered considerable speculation in political circles. Party insiders, however, suggest the move could be part of a carefully crafted political strategy.

Nishant’s entry comes amid increasing chatter about Nitish Kumar potentially moving to the Rajya Sabha, a development that many observers interpret as an early signal of a possible leadership transition within Bihar politics.

Addressing party workers after taking membership, Nishant said he would begin his political career as a grassroots worker within the organisation.

“I will work under the guidance of my father, Nitish Kumar. Over the past two decades, he has done remarkable work for Bihar and the nation. My priority will be to carry those achievements to every household,” he said.

Nishant also described the speculation about his father shifting to the Rajya Sabha as a personal decision that deserves respect, adding that he would strive to live up to the expectations of the people.

Political observers view his induction as the beginning of a structured grooming process within the JD(U). Many believe Nishant Kumar could soon be entrusted with significant organisational responsibilities as the party prepares for future political challenges.

With debates intensifying over Nitish Kumar’s long-term political role, Nishant’s arrival has placed the spotlight on the next generation of leadership within the JD(U). For now, the young entrant has signalled that his focus will remain on strengthening the party and connecting with the people at the grassroots level.
