Srinagar: A security alert was triggered at Srinagar Airport on Sunday after authorities detained two US nationals for carrying a prohibited satellite phone in their luggage.
The device was обнаружed during routine baggage screening by airport security personnel, prompting immediate questioning of the passengers. They were later handed over to local police for further investigation.
One of the detained individuals has been identified as Jeoffery Scot. Officials confirmed that the seized satellite phone was manufactured by Garmin.

Authorities reiterated that satellite phones are strictly banned in India without prior government approval. The restriction falls under provisions of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933 and the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, which prohibit unauthorized possession or use of such communication devices.
An advisory issued by the Consulate General of India in New York clearly states that foreign nationals—regardless of visa category—must obtain prior permission before carrying satellite phones into the country.
Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have also cautioned their citizens against carrying restricted communication devices like satellite phones or certain GPS equipment to India, warning that violations could lead to detention, fines, or even arrest.
The incident has once again highlighted heightened security vigilance at airports, especially in sensitive regions like Kashmir.
