Vedanta Boosts Green Energy Use by 50%, Cuts 3 Million Tonnes CO₂ in FY26

New Delhi: Marking World Earth Day, Vedanta Limited announced a sharp surge in renewable energy adoption, increasing usage by over 50% to 3.97 billion units in FY26. The transition helped the company avoid nearly 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the fiscal year.

The diversified natural resources major said its portfolio—spanning aluminium, copper, zinc, iron, steel, silver, oil & gas, and power—continues to play a key role in supporting clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing. These materials are critical for sectors such as electrification, renewable infrastructure, and energy-efficient mobility.

Vedanta also reported steady progress towards its net-zero targets. The company reduced its emissions intensity in metals production by 15% compared to FY21 levels, reflecting improved operational efficiency. Additionally, it utilised 365 kilotonnes of biomass fuel, cutting a further 0.5–0.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

On water sustainability, key businesses including Hindustan Zinc Limited and Cairn Oil & Gas achieved net water positivity, reinforcing Vedanta’s broader push to integrate sustainability into core operations.

ESL Steel Steps Up Green Initiatives

ESL Steel Limited highlighted its environmental efforts on Earth Day, focusing on biodiversity, climate resilience, and circular practices. The company has developed Miyawaki forests with over 70,000 native saplings, expected to absorb up to 1,500 tonnes of CO₂ annually. It has also undertaken bird conservation initiatives and ensured full reuse of treated wastewater through advanced systems.

In addition, ESL Steel is promoting plastic reduction, circular economy practices, and clean energy adoption, supported by its solar power installations. Its V-XEGA TMT bars have received GreenPro certification from the Confederation of Indian Industry, recognising them as environmentally sustainable products.

Global Recognition for ESG Performance

Vedanta’s sustainability efforts have gained international recognition. Hindustan Zinc Limited secured the top global rank in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026, while Vedanta Group featured in the rankings for the third consecutive year. Vedanta Aluminium also placed among the top 10 globally.

The company further strengthened its ESG credentials through global benchmarks, certifications, and responsible production innovations, including expansion of its low-carbon aluminium portfolio.
