Kolkata: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata early Saturday morning, kicking off his four-day India visit amid renewed efforts to deepen strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington.

Rubio landed at around 7 AM and was received at the airport by Sergio Gor, who later described the visit as a key step toward strengthening the India-US partnership.

In a post on X, Gor said the two nations have an “ambitious agenda ahead,” with discussions expected to focus on defence cooperation, trade, energy security, and regional strategic coordination.

PM Modi, Jaishankar Meetings Scheduled

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Rubio is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. He will also hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday.

The high-profile visit comes ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which Rubio will attend on May 26 at Hyderabad House alongside diplomats from fellow Quad nations — India, Japan, and Australia.

Kolkata Visit Begins With Missionaries of Charity Stop

Soon after arriving in Kolkata, Rubio and his wife, Jeanette D. Rubio, visited the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity, the humanitarian organisation founded by Mother Teresa.

The visit carried symbolic significance, as Rubio became the first US Secretary of State to visit Kolkata in nearly 14 years.

Strategic Visit Amid Trade Frictions

Rubio’s India tour comes at a sensitive moment in bilateral relations, with both countries attempting to navigate recent trade tensions linked to tariff measures introduced during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Despite economic friction points, both sides are expected to push forward cooperation in critical sectors including defence technology, Indo-Pacific security, and energy collaboration.

Apart from New Delhi and Kolkata, Rubio’s itinerary also includes visits to Agra and Jaipur before he departs India on May 26.
