New Delhi: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has received a major boost in the Lok Sabha after a group of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs formally expressed their willingness to support the ruling coalition, pushing the NDA’s effective strength beyond the 300-seat mark. The development is being viewed as one of the biggest political setbacks for the TMC and its chief, Mamata Banerjee, in recent years.
Rebel TMC Bloc Writes to Speaker
The rebellion was spearheaded by senior TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who claimed that 20 of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs had signed a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The letter reportedly sought recognition of the group as a separate bloc and conveyed its decision to support the BJP-led NDA in Parliament.
According to reports, the letter was submitted to the Speaker’s office after a meeting attended by dissident TMC MPs in New Delhi. The MPs are also said to have requested seating arrangements alongside NDA members in the Lok Sabha.
NDA’s Parliamentary Position Strengthens
If the support of the rebel MPs is formally recognised, the NDA’s strength in the Lower House would rise to around 312 seats, providing the ruling alliance with a far more comfortable majority. The BJP remains the coalition’s largest constituent with 240 MPs.
The expanded numbers would reduce the NDA’s dependence on key allies such as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) for crucial legislative business, giving the government greater room to manoeuvre on contentious policy issues.
High-Profile MPs Among Signatories
The rebel camp is said to include several prominent TMC faces, including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, actor-MPs Dev, Rachana Banerjee, Satabdi Roy, June Maliah, Yusuf Pathan, Partha Bhowmik, Arup Chakraborty and others. The group has maintained that while it intends to support the NDA, it is not immediately merging with the BJP.
Mamata Banerjee Faces Major Challenge
The reported split has triggered a serious crisis within the TMC’s parliamentary ranks. With the party holding 28 Lok Sabha seats, the backing of 20 MPs would amount to more than two-thirds of its strength, a threshold that could have significant implications under anti-defection provisions.
Political observers describe the development as the most severe parliamentary rebellion faced by the TMC since its formation, raising fresh questions about Mamata Banerjee’s control over the party following its recent electoral setbacks.
Political Fallout Ahead
The rebellion has set the stage for a major political and legal battle over the future of the dissident MPs and the TMC’s parliamentary identity. While the Mamata Banerjee camp has branded the rebels as “traitors”, the dissident faction insists its move reflects the political mandate and changing ground realities in West Bengal.
With Parliament’s numbers now tilting further in favour of the NDA, the unfolding TMC crisis could reshape the national political landscape and alter the balance of power in the Lok Sabha in the months ahead.
