Bokaro: In a major push towards cleaner steel production, the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has signed a landmark agreement with Forbes Marshall Private Limited to introduce hydrogen gas injection in Blast Furnace No. 1.
The agreement, formalized in the presence of Director-in-Charge Priy Ranjan and senior officials, marks a decisive step in BSL’s transition toward low-carbon steelmaking.
Positioned at the core of global decarbonisation efforts, the initiative aims to cut emissions from blast furnace operations—one of the steel sector’s biggest sources of carbon dioxide. Under the umbrella of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project will partially substitute carbon-intensive fuels with hydrogen, a cleaner reducing agent.
SAIL’s Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) will serve as the principal consultant for the project, while technical expertise and support will come from Primetals Technologies.
What sets the project apart is its sheer scale. Officials say the volume of hydrogen planned for injection at Bokaro is among the largest ever attempted globally in a blast furnace, placing the plant at the cutting edge of green steel innovation.
Once operational, the initiative is expected to significantly lower carbon emissions while strengthening BSL and SAIL’s position as leaders in sustainable steel manufacturing—potentially setting new global benchmarks for decarbonising heavy industry.
