News Desk: The nine-day festival of Chaitra Navratri commenced today with spiritual fervour sweeping across India, as millions of devotees marked the auspicious occasion with prayers, rituals, and fasting—signalling the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many regions.
Temples across cities and towns witnessed a surge of devotees early in the morning, with aarti and kalash sthapana rituals setting the tone for the celebrations. From the national capital to small towns, the air resonated with chants and devotional hymns as people gathered to seek blessings of Goddess Durga.
Worship of Navdurga Begins
Navratri—literally meaning “nine nights”—is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine divine manifestations, collectively known as Navdurga. Each day of the festival is devoted to a different form of the Goddess, symbolising strength, wisdom, prosperity, and protection from evil.
Spiritual Renewal and New Beginnings
While four Navratris are observed annually, Chaitra Navratri holds unique importance as it coincides with the onset of spring and marks the start of the Hindu lunar calendar in several parts of India. The festival is seen as a time for spiritual cleansing, renewal, and new beginnings, aligning with nature’s transition into a vibrant season.
Fasting, Devotion, and Festive Traditions
Devotees observe rigorous fasts during the nine days, consuming only satvik food and abstaining from grains, onion, and garlic. Homes and temples are adorned, and daily rituals include bhajans, aarti, and recitations dedicated to the divine feminine energy, or Shakti.
The celebrations will culminate on the ninth day with Ram Navami, commemorating the birth of Lord Ram, bringing the spiritually charged festival to a grand and auspicious close.
