Election Process and Key Highlights
The election was conducted in the Parliament earlier this week, just weeks after the surprise resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down citing health reasons—though political observers speculated there were deeper motives behind his sudden exit.
Voting began sharply at 10 AM, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi casting the first ballot, setting the tone for the day. He was followed by senior Union Ministers and opposition leaders, as members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha headed to the Parliament House for the secret ballot.
Who is C.P. Radhakrishnan?
A seasoned politician from Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has a strong background in public service. He currently serves as the Governor of Maharashtra, a position he assumed on July 31, 2024. A longstanding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Radhakrishnan’s political career began in earnest when he was elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore in 1998, winning re-election in 1999.
Over the years, he also served as the Tamil Nadu BJP state unit president (2001–2005) and held governorships in Jharkhand, Telangana, and Puducherry. He is known for his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is respected for his administrative and political acumen.
Next Steps
With his election now confirmed, C.P. Radhakrishnan will take over the role of Vice President of India, assuming not only the second-highest constitutional office in the country but also the key responsibility of chairing the Rajya Sabha and acting as President in case of a vacancy.
This election marks a significant chapter in India’s political landscape, especially amid speculation surrounding his predecessor’s abrupt resignation, and sets the stage for Radhakrishnan’s leadership in the upper house of Parliament.
