Mumbai: Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most adored icons and affectionately remembered as Bollywood’s He-Man, has passed away at 89 after a prolonged illness, leaving a profound void in the Indian film industry.
For more than six decades, Dharmendra reigned as a symbol of effortless charm and endearing masculinity, defining popular cinema with unforgettable performances in Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, and over 300 other films. His magnetic screen presence and natural acting style earned him generations of devoted admirers and one of the richest legacies in film history.
Dharmendra began his screen journey in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and most recently appeared in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), still captivating audiences even in the twilight of his career. Widely regarded as one of the most handsome and successful leading men of Indian cinema, he also holds the distinction of featuring in the highest number of hit films in Hindi film history.
In 2012, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to Indian arts and culture. Beyond cinema, Dharmendra also briefly stepped into public life, serving as a BJP Member of Parliament for Bikaner, Rajasthan, from 2004 to 2009.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led national tributes, calling Dharmendra’s death “the end of an era.” In a heartfelt message, he praised the actor’s remarkable versatility, saying Dharmendra brought unique warmth and depth to every role. Modi also highlighted the star’s humility and kindness, offering condolences to the grieving family and millions of fans.
