EC Removed 808 Parties in Two Months
New Delhi: In a major clean-up drive, the Election Commission (EC) of India (ECI) has struck off 474 registered but unrecognised political parties from its list for failing to comply with mandatory rules.
The commission said these parties were removed as they had not contested even a single election in the past six years, dating back to 2019. This is the second phase of the ongoing exercise—last month, the EC had already delisted 334 such outfits. Together, 808 parties have now been axed in just two months.

Alongside, the poll body has identified 359 other unrecognised parties across 23 States and Union Territories for not filing their audited annual accounts for three consecutive years. To ensure due process, the Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states and UTs have been directed to issue show-cause notices. These parties will be given a hearing before a final decision is taken.
The Commission clarified that any delisting follows a detailed report from the state election authorities, reinforcing its push for transparency and accountability in the electoral system.
