New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday unveiled the schedule for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, set to take place on September 9. The announcement follows the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, which necessitated the fresh poll.
According to an official press release, the notification for the election will be issued on August 7, with the last date for filing nominations being August 21. The voting and counting of votes will both be conducted on the same day—September 9.
As per Article 66 of the Indian Constitution, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament—unlike the President’s election, which includes members of both Parliament and state legislatures.
This year, the electoral college will consist of 240 Rajya Sabha MPs and 542 Lok Sabha MPs, accounting for the current vacancies of five seats in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha.
