Brussels: In a dramatic escalation of its Iran policy, the European Union has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation — a step that places the powerful force alongside the world’s most notorious extremist groups.
The decision, cleared by all 27 EU member states, signals a sharp break from years of cautious diplomacy with Tehran. European leaders say the move is aimed at holding Iran’s most powerful security arm accountable for widespread human rights abuses and destabilising regional activities.
Crackdown at the Core of the Decision
EU officials say the designation is rooted in evidence that the IRGC played a central role in violently crushing nationwide protests, where thousands of civilians were reportedly killed. The bloc says the scale and brutality of the response left no room for political neutrality.
European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas said the label reflects conduct, not titles. “When an organisation operates through terror, it must be treated as a terrorist group — no matter its official status,” she said.
