Dhanbad: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, is set to roll out a 12-week online course on Earthquake Seismology via the SWAYAM-NPTEL platform, commencing July 21, 2025, and concluding on October 10, 2025.
The final exam is scheduled for November 2, 2025.
Led by Prof. Mohit Kumar Agarwal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT (ISM), the course aims to provide in-depth insights into the science of earthquakes and seismic wave propagation. It is tailored for students and professionals in geophysics, geology, tectonics, planetary science, and earthquake engineering.
The curriculum will explore key themes such as earthquake sources, seismic wave behavior, seismic data interpretation, and the development of Earth models. Special emphasis will also be placed on the societal importance of seismology in mitigating seismic risks.
Participants will receive comprehensive support materials, including lecture notes, presentations, assignments, and homework. The recommended reference text is An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure by Seth Stein and Michael Wysession.
This initiative underlines IIT-ISM Dhanbad’s commitment to enhancing digital access to quality education in earth sciences through innovative e-learning platforms.
