Guwahati: Amid ongoing strains in bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, exchanged warm greetings on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
In an official letter dated 4 June 2025, PM Modi, on behalf of the people and the Government of Bharat, extended heartfelt wishes to Dr Yunus and the people of Bangladesh on the auspicious occasion of the Islamic festival.
“This holy festival is an integral part of India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and is celebrated with immense joy and fervour by millions of followers of Islam across the country,” wrote PM Modi. “It reminds us of the timeless values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood—principles essential to building a peaceful and inclusive world.” He concluded by extending his best wishes for Dr Yunus’s good health and well-being.
Responding to PM Modi’s letter, Dr Yunus expressed appreciation for the kind gesture and warm wishes. In his reply dated 6 June, the Nobel Laureate noted that Eid-ul-Azha embodies shared cultural and spiritual values between the two neighbouring nations.
“Eid-ul-Azha is a time of reflection, which brings communities together in the spirit of festivity, sacrifice, generosity, and unity,” wrote Dr Yunus. “It inspires us to work collectively for the greater benefit of people across the world.”
Currently serving as the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s caretaker administration, Dr Yunus also expressed hope that the “spirit of mutual respect and understanding” would continue to guide India and Bangladesh in strengthening their ties for the greater good of both nations.
Concluding his letter, Dr Yunus extended warm wishes to PM Modi for good health and happiness, and to the people of India for peace, progress, and prosperity. “Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration,” he signed.
