New Delhi: India has urged Bangladesh to halt the planned demolition of the ancestral home of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray in Mymensingh, calling it a cultural landmark that deserves preservation.
The historic property, once owned by Ray’s grandfather and celebrated author Upendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury, is currently in disrepair and under the possession of the Bangladeshi government.
In a statement marked by deep concern, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed “profound regret” over reports of the impending demolition and appealed to Dhaka to convert the building into a museum, celebrating the shared cultural heritage between the two nations.
India also offered its full cooperation and support in conserving the iconic site, highlighting its symbolic importance to the Bengali cultural renaissance.
The appeal comes amid rising public sentiment and cultural voices advocating for the site’s protection, which stands as a testament to the Ray family’s enduring literary and cinematic legacy.
