ISM Prof. Sanjit Pal Honoured with India’s Top Geophysics Award

Dhanbad: Professor Sanjit Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has been selected for the prestigious National Geoscience Award 2024 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The award recognises his outstanding contributions in the field of Geophysics, particularly for advancing exploration techniques and geophysical research methodologies.

A distinguished academic with a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Burdwan, an M.Sc. Tech in Geophysics from Banaras Hindu University, and a Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Pal has made significant strides in applied geophysics.

His work spans cutting-edge domains, including UAV and satellite-based remote sensing, gravity and magnetic methods, electrical resistivity tomography, seismic techniques, and the integration of AI and machine learning into geophysical data interpretation.

The National Geoscience Award, one of the highest honours in the field, is presented annually to individuals making exceptional advancements in geophysical technologies, instrumentation, geomagnetic studies, and their real-world applications. Prof. Pal’s research is acclaimed for its interdisciplinary reach—spanning mining and near-surface geophysics, groundwater and mineral exploration, coal mine fire detection, environmental studies, archaeological investigations, and agricultural geophysics.

Reacting to the honour, Prof. Pal said, “It is a great honour to be chosen for this prestigious award. I am grateful to my students and colleagues who have supported me throughout this journey. I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of geophysical research that benefits both science and society.”
