New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant on Monday formally took charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, bringing decades of judicial experience to the nation’s highest court. He succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, who retired on Sunday.
The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of key national leaders including Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Justice Kant’s tenure at the helm of the judiciary will extend for nearly 15 months, until February 9, 2027.

A Distinguished Legal Path
Justice Surya Kant began his legal practice in Hisar in 1984, before moving to Chandigarh where he became known for his expertise in constitutional, civil, and service law. His rapid ascent saw him appointed as Advocate General of Haryana in 2000, becoming the youngest to ever hold that post, and designated Senior Advocate in 2001.
