Kanpur: Shivam Mishra, son of prominent tobacco businessman K.K. Mishra, walked free on bail within hours of being arrested on Thursday in connection with a high-profile car crash that injured six people in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, according to media reports.

Police had taken Shivam into custody in the morning — four days after the accident — over allegations that he was driving a luxury Lamborghini while under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle reportedly rammed into an autorickshaw before ploughing into a parked Royal Enfield motorcycle.

Witnesses said the impact hurled the motorcycle rider nearly 10 feet into the air. The sports car allegedly mounted the bike’s front wheel, dragged it along the road, and finally smashed into a roadside pole before stopping.

Eyewitnesses claimed Shivam tried to escape after the crash, but bystanders shattered the Lamborghini Revuelto’s windows and pulled him out. His security staff, travelling in another vehicle, arrived shortly afterwards but were unable to remove him before police reached the scene and restored order.

Despite video footage circulating online that appears to show Shivam being pulled from the driver’s seat, his legal counsel denied he was behind the wheel. The defence instead named driver Mohan Lal as the one driving at the time.

Mohan later appeared in a Kanpur court claiming responsibility, stating he lost control when Shivam allegedly suffered a seizure moments before the collision — a claim backed by Shivam’s parents, who said their son has epilepsy. The court, however, rejected Mohan’s version and dismissed his surrender plea.

The swift grant of bail has drawn attention, with some locals and victims earlier alleging police leniency because of the family’s influence — an allegation authorities have not commented on.
