New Delhi/Dhaka: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended an invitation to Bangladesh’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit India with his family, signalling New Delhi’s intent to maintain close engagement with Dhaka’s new leadership.
In a congratulatory letter, PM Modi conveyed his willingness to work closely with the BNP leader to further deepen the wide-ranging bilateral partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
Highlighting the historic bonds between India and Bangladesh, the Prime Minister noted that the relationship is rooted in shared history, cultural affinity and the common aspirations of both peoples for peace and prosperity. He emphasised that the strong alignment of developmental priorities between the two nations would continue to guide future cooperation.
Congratulating Rahman on his electoral triumph, Modi described the victory as a clear endorsement of the Bangladeshi people’s faith in his leadership. The mandate, he said, reflects public support for Rahman’s vision of steering Bangladesh towards stability, peace and economic growth.
The Prime Minister expressed hope for expanded collaboration across key sectors including connectivity, trade, technology, education, skill development, energy, healthcare, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges. He also underlined the importance of stronger regional cooperation to advance shared objectives.
Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister a day earlier, ushering in a new political phase after nearly 18 months of uncertainty under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
India was represented at the swearing-in ceremony by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, alongside senior political and military leaders.
The BNP, under Rahman’s leadership, secured a decisive two-thirds majority in the February 12 polls, winning 49.97 per cent of the vote and 209 seats. The election results were formally announced on February 13.
