UK: The Oral Health Research Incubator, a collaborative initiative led by Newcastle University and the University of Sheffield, has secured funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) as part of a national drive to strengthen research capacity in critical health sectors. This incubator aims to nurture and support researchers focused on applied oral health challenges, fostering a vibrant community of early- and mid-career professionals dedicated to advancing policy-relevant research.
Designed as a virtual hub tailored to the oral health research community, the incubator will provide training, networking, and outreach opportunities to bridge the gap between research and policy. Its goal is to enhance skills, promote collaboration, and build a sustainable academic workforce capable of tackling pressing oral health issues across the UK.
Chris Vernazza, Interim Head of Newcastle University’s School of Dental Sciences, emphasized the incubator’s role in preparing the next generation of researchers to meet diverse oral health challenges and translate findings into impactful policies. Zoe Marshman, Professor at the University of Sheffield, highlighted the urgent need for coordinated research to address ongoing oral health concerns such as disease prevention, access to care, and early diagnosis, especially among vulnerable populations.
The incubator will focus on identifying obstacles faced by emerging researchers, fostering talent retention, and creating strong ties between academics, policymakers, and stakeholders to set future research priorities—ultimately aiming to improve oral health outcomes nationwide.
