Patna: In a significant political development, Nitish Kumar has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Bihar following his recent election to the Rajya Sabha, according to media reports.
The move comes in line with constitutional norms, which mandate that an individual cannot simultaneously hold membership in both Parliament and a state legislature. Kumar was required to vacate his विधानसभा seat within 14 days of entering Parliament, prompting his resignation.
Planned Exit Amid Growing Speculation
While the decision appears sudden, it follows months of speculation surrounding Kumar’s political future. The veteran leader had earlier indicated his intent to shift to a parliamentary role, signaling a gradual withdrawal from active state governance.
A Record-Breaking Tenure
At 75, Kumar leaves behind a remarkable legacy as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister, having taken oath a record 10 times. Throughout his career, he navigated complex political landscapes, leading governments under both the National Democratic Alliance and the Mahagathbandhan.
Comeback Driven by Welfare Politics
In 2025, defying critics who had written him off, Kumar staged a strong political comeback. His renewed support base, particularly among women voters, was widely attributed to welfare measures such as the bicycle scheme for schoolgirls and the state’s prohibition policy.
Power Shift Within Alliance
However, the internal dynamics of the ruling alliance had been shifting. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the dominant force, while JD(U)’s relative strength declined, intensifying calls for leadership change.
Meanwhile, the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal continued to question Kumar’s age and administrative capacity, further fueling speculation about a transition in Bihar’s leadership.
With Kumar’s exit, all eyes are now on who will take charge next, marking the beginning of a new political chapter in the state.
