Patna: In a shocking food fraud bust, Patna authorities have seized two truckloads of chemically treated “fresh” potatoes (fake potatoes) being sold across city markets. Old tubers, coated with red soil and dangerous chemicals to mimic new produce, were being sold at triple their actual price, putting unsuspecting consumers at serious health risk.
Old Potatoes Sold as Fresh at High Prices
The operation, led by Food Safety Officer Ajay Kumar, revealed that old potatoes transported daily from Chhattisgarh were being disguised and sold at a significant markup. Traders reportedly purchased them at Rs 20-25 per kilogram and sold them for Rs 70-75 per kilogram.

“These potatoes are easily distinguishable from natural ones,” Kumar explained. “They emit a strong chemical odour, have an unnaturally shiny surface, spoil within two days, and the interior colour does not match the exterior. Unlike real potatoes, they float in water.”
Panic and Immediate Action
The raid caused panic among traders, with several fleeing the scene. Authorities are identifying them and preparing further legal action. The seized potatoes have been sent for laboratory testing to determine the extent of chemical contamination.
Health Risks of Fake Potatoes
Experts warn that the chemicals used in these counterfeit potatoes can cause liver and kidney damage. Regular consumption may lead to digestive issues such as constipation, bloating, and appetite loss, posing a serious health hazard to consumers.
Inspections Extend to Local Restaurants
Officials also inspected local eateries, including Sanvi Collection Cafe on Boring Road and Skyline Biryani House in Raja Bazar, taking samples of suspected adulterated paneer. The sale of paneer and biryani from these establishments has been temporarily suspended pending lab tests.
How to Test Fake Potatoes
Consumers can use simple methods to identify fake or chemically treated potatoes:
-
Smell Test: Genuine potatoes have an earthy smell, while fake ones may emit a chemical odour.
-
Check the Color: Natural potatoes usually have a consistent, earthy skin tone. A shiny or overly bright appearance may signal chemical treatments.
-
Rub-off Test: Rubbing the surface with a cloth can reveal if any artificial colouring or coating comes off.
-
Water Test: Fake potatoes may emit colour when soaked in water, indicating added dyes or chemicals.
-
Peel and Texture Check: Authentic potatoes have a firm texture and natural skin. Fake ones might have an unnatural smoothness or peel off too easily.
A Wake-Up Call for Consumers
This incident has sparked renewed concern over food safety standards in Patna, highlighting the risks posed by adulterated produce in local markets. Authorities urge consumers to carefully inspect vegetables before purchase and report any suspicious activities.
