New Delhi: PM Modi on Thursday turned the tables on teachers, giving them a “homework” of his own—leading campaigns to promote swadeshi products and ignite the spirit of “vocal for local” among students.

Interacting with National Teacher Awardees, Modi urged schools to mark “Swadeshi Day” or “Swadeshi Week,” where students bring local products from home, share their stories, and showcase India-made goods. He suggested that marches in villages with placards promoting swadeshi could inspire communities and strengthen the “Make in India” movement.

The Prime Minister also pressed for indigenous materials to be used in school art, craft, and celebrations, to instill pride in Indian-made products. “Outside every shop and home, there should be a board that reads Har Ghar Swadeshi,” Modi said, underlining the cultural and economic importance of homegrown goods.

Drawing on Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, Modi stressed that today’s generation must carry forward the mission of self-reliance. He asked teachers to sow this vision in simple language and local dialects so that students connect deeply with the idea.

He cautioned against over-dependence on imports, citing India’s annual spending of over ₹1 lakh crore on edible oil alone as an example. “A nation dependent on others can never achieve its true potential,” the Prime Minister said.
