New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has nominated four distinguished individuals to the Rajya Sabha, recognising their exceptional contributions in various fields. The nominated members include renowned public prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, social worker and educator C. Sadanandan Master, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and historian-academic Dr. Meenakshi Jain.
The official announcement came through a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday.
Ujjwal Nikam, a prominent legal figure from Maharashtra, is best known for his role as the special public prosecutor in high-profile cases, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He has long been regarded as a symbol of judicial integrity and legal acumen.
C Sadanandan Master, a social worker and educationist from Kerala, brings a legacy of grassroots activism and commitment to public service. A victim of political violence, Master lost both his legs but continued to contribute actively to social welfare and education.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a seasoned diplomat, has held key ambassadorial positions in the United States, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Most recently, he played a pivotal role as the Chief Coordinator of India’s G20 Presidency in 2023.
Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a noted historian and academic, has served as an Associate Professor of History at Delhi University’s Gargi College. Her work in Indian historical studies and cultural discourse has earned her national recognition.
Under Article 80 of the Constitution, the President of India can nominate up to 12 members to the Rajya Sabha for their contributions to the fields of art, literature, science, and social service. The latest nominations reflect a blend of legal expertise, academic excellence, public service, and diplomatic experience.
