New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the latter briefed him on his recent Alaska summit with US President Donald Trump, where the war in Ukraine topped the agenda.
Thanking Putin for the call, PM Modi posted on X: “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders also reviewed bilateral ties and agreed to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They also agreed to remain in close touch on global and regional developments.
The Putin–Trump meeting, held on August 15 in Alaska, ended without a breakthrough on Ukraine. The talks come at a sensitive moment, as Washington recently slapped 25% tariffs on select Indian goods and imposed a penalty on New Delhi for purchasing Russian oil.
Meanwhile, Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, keeping diplomatic momentum alive despite the stalemate in Alaska.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had welcomed the Trump-Putin summit, calling their leadership in the pursuit of peace “commendable” and reiterating that the way forward lies in dialogue and diplomacy. India has consistently urged an early end to the conflict and emphasized that “this is not an era of war.”
