Russia welcomes Indian exports if goods struggle to enter US market amid tariff war

Moscow/New Delhi: As trade tensions escalate between New Delhi and Washington, Russia has extended a welcome to Indian goods struggling to enter the US market due to fresh tariff barriers.

Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin said Moscow is ready to open its markets for Indian exports. “If Indian goods are facing difficulties entering the US market, the Russian market is always open to them,” he told reporters, calling recent US sanctions against India “unjustified.”

Babushkin stressed that India-Russia energy cooperation will continue despite external pressure, adding that Western sanctions were backfiring on those who imposed them. “It is a challenging situation for India, but we trust our bilateral ties will remain strong,” he said.

The remarks came a day after the White House confirmed new sanctions on India, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that President Donald Trump approved the measures to pressure Russia over its ongoing war in Ukraine. “He has made it very clear that he wants this war to end, and sanctions on India are part of that effort,” she said.

The Trump administration has slapped an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods—one linked to India’s own tariff regime on American exports, and another specifically targeting New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The second levy takes effect from August 27, 2025.

While Washington’s move has sparked concerns in New Delhi, Moscow has positioned itself as a counterweight, signalling stronger trade and strategic cooperation with India at a time of growing global economic realignment.
