New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest steelmaker, has further reinforced India’s defence self-reliance by supplying high-grade steel for two key Indian Navy vessels—INS Ajay and INS Nistar. This move underscores SAIL’s growing role in supporting the nation’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision in the defence sector.
INS Ajay, the last in a series of eight indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW-SWC), was launched in July last year by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE). SAIL provided the complete requirement of DMR-grade steel plates for the vessel, which are critical for both structural strength and stealth capability.
Similarly, for INS Nistar—India’s first indigenously designed Diving Support Vessel (DSV), commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) also in July—SAIL supplied the entire quantity of special-grade steel plates. The advanced vessel is equipped for submarine rescue, deep-sea diving operations, and underwater surveillance.
SAIL’s consistent supply of specialized steel for such critical naval assets highlights its strategic commitment to bolstering India’s maritime defence. With every consignment, SAIL is not only fueling infrastructure but also fortifying the nation’s security preparedness.
The initiative reaffirms SAIL’s pivotal contribution to India’s defence production ecosystem and its unwavering support toward building a self-reliant and secure India.
