Sanjay Malhotra takes charge as 26th RBI Governor

Mumbai: Sanjay Malhotra officially took over as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday. He will serve a three-year term as head of the central bank, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure concluded the day before.

Malhotra, a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Rajasthan cadre, previously served as the revenue secretary in the Union Finance Ministry. He also held the position of secretary in the Department of Financial Services within the same ministry.

Before his new role, Malhotra was the chairman and managing director of the Rural Electrification Corporation and served as additional secretary in the Union Ministry of Power.

At 56, Malhotra takes charge at a time when India’s economy is largely stable, having navigated the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
