New Delhi: In a deeply troubling development, three Indian nationals have been abducted by a terror group linked to Al-Qaeda in Mali, West Africa. The incident took place during a coordinated terror assault on Malian military positions by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) on July 1, according to media and official reports.
The kidnapped Indians were employed at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, a western region of Mali. Armed militants stormed the premises and forcibly took the trio hostage amid broader terrorist attacks across multiple government and military installations in western and central Mali.
In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a strong statement expressing “deep concern” over the abduction and condemned the act as “deplorable.”
“The Government of India unequivocally condemns this act of violence and calls upon the Government of the Republic of Mali to take all necessary steps to ensure the safe and swift release of the abducted Indian nationals,” the MEA said.
Embassy on Alert, Families Contacted
The Indian Embassy in Bamako is said to be in constant communication with Mali’s government authorities, local law enforcement agencies, and the management of Diamond Cement Factory. The embassy has also reached out to the families of the abducted workers to provide support and updates.
“Senior officials at the Ministry are closely monitoring the evolving situation and remain engaged at various levels to facilitate a safe and early release,” the MEA added.
Government Advisory Issued
The Ministry also issued a security advisory for Indian citizens residing in Mali, urging them to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk zones, and stay connected with the Indian Embassy for real-time updates and assistance.
“The safety, security, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad remains a matter of utmost priority,” the MEA emphasized.
This abduction highlights the volatile security environment in Mali, where jihadist groups have intensified attacks in recent months, posing risks to foreign workers and investments.
