JNS: Former US Ambassador to Japan and Democratic heavyweight Rahm Emanuel has sharply criticized President Donald Trump, accusing him of undermining decades of US-India diplomatic progress in pursuit of a Nobel Peace Prize.
In an interview with MeidasTouch, Emanuel said Trump acted “out of ego and for money from Pakistan,” calling the handling of India — a key counterweight to China — “disastrous.” “The President has thrown away 40 years of careful strategic planning,” Emanuel added.
The former White House Chief of Staff and ex-Chicago Mayor said tensions escalated after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declined to endorse Trump for the Nobel, despite the president claiming credit for brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire. Emanuel linked Trump’s approach to alleged business dealings involving his family and Pakistan.
Emanuel warned that Trump’s moves handed China an advantage, pointing to Beijing’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean and rising US tariffs on Chinese goods. He also cited US-India trade tensions, including nearly 50% tariffs on Indian products and disputes over Russia oil purchases, as evidence of deteriorating bilateral ties.
“The mishandling of India is a major strategic blunder,” Emanuel concluded, highlighting the broader geopolitical consequences of Trump’s unilateral actions.
