Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns citing health reasons

New Delhi: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday evening, citing health reasons. His resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, comes into immediate effect.

In a formally worded letter, Dhankhar stated that he was stepping down to prioritise his health and comply with ongoing medical advice. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Murmu for her support and cooperation throughout his tenure. He also acknowledged the guidance and backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers.

“This journey has been one of immense learning, honour and privilege. The affection, support and warmth extended by the Hon’ble Members of Parliament will remain etched in my heart,” Dhankhar noted in his farewell message.

Dhankhar, 74, had been serving as the 14th Vice President of India since August 11, 2022. His resignation comes at the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and just days after reports suggested he was advised rest following recent health concerns, including a minor cardiac procedure earlier this year.

A noted constitutional authority and former Governor of West Bengal, Dhankhar was known for his sharp legal acumen and assertive role as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation marks only the third such instance in India’s history where a Vice President has left office before the end of their term.
