Guwahati: Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK) Assam is set to organize the annual Devarshi Narad Jayanti celebrations on 1 June 2025 at Sudarshanalaya, Barbari, Guwahati. The event, starting at 3:30 pm, will commemorate the birth anniversary of Devarshi Narad, revered as the world’s first journalist, with a series of engaging programs and felicitation ceremonies.
Prominent Assamese children’s writer and editor of Shantunu, Shantanu Tamuli, will be conferred with the Devarshi Narad Jayanti Award-2025 during the occasion. The award comprises a citation, cash prize, and a collection of books, as informed by VSK Assam Secretary Kishor Shivam in an official statement.
In addition to the main award, three city-based journalists will be felicitated for their contributions to the media industry. The journalists are: Himanshu Pathak (Asomiya Khabar), Diganta Saharia (Prag News) and Khanin Deka (Niyomiya Barta).
The function will be graced by Harshvardhan Tripathi, a nationally acclaimed journalist, political commentator, and progressive thinker, who will serve as the primary speaker for the event.
Devarshi Narad, recognized in Hindu tradition as a celestial sage and divine messenger for the Devatas, Asuras, and human beings, is celebrated for his wisdom, devotion to Lord Vishnu, and his immortal utterance “Narayan Narayan.” Mentioned in Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various Puranas, Narad is considered more of an institution than an individual figure in Indian scriptures.
Narad Jayanti is traditionally observed on the Pratipada Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha (Jeth), and is widely revered across the Indian subcontinent. The event is expected to bring together media professionals, scholars, and community leaders in a celebration of truthful journalism, cultural heritage, and spiritual wisdom.
