China will resume supply of fertilisers, rare earth minerals & others to India

New Delhi: In a significant sign of warming relations, China has assured India it will resume the supply of fertilisers, rare earth minerals, and tunnel boring machines, after nearly a year-long pause. The commitment came during talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Monday.

According to reports, Jaishankar had pressed Beijing on restoring shipments of urea, NPK, DAP, rare earths, and heavy machinery during his recent visit to China. On Monday, both sides described their engagement as “fruitful,” stressing the need for a reset in ties after years of strain following the 2020 Galwan clash.

“Highlighted that our relations are best guided by the three mutuals—mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest,” Jaishankar said, adding that the talks also covered trade, border trade, pilgrimages, people-to-people exchanges, river data sharing, and regional issues.

Wang Yi’s visit marks the first high-level contact between the two countries since 2020, and precedes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled trip to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit from August 31 to September 1.

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is expected to raise border issues with Wang on Tuesday, even as the two sides signal readiness to move beyond four years of diplomatic chill.

The rapprochement also comes against the backdrop of US tariff wars with both India and China, and Washington’s tightening scrutiny over Russian oil imports. For Delhi and Beijing, the latest engagement appears aimed at stabilising ties and restoring economic momentum while managing long-standing disputes.
