Project Timeline: Construction in 2026, Completion in Five Years
New Delhi: Adani Power Ltd has joined hands with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to set up the 570 megawatt Wangchhu hydropower project, marking a major step in bilateral energy cooperation. The estimated ₹6,000-crore venture will be developed on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model.
The agreements, signed in Thimphu in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, include the concession arrangement and power purchase pact needed to move the project forward. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and the plant is targeted for completion within five years.
Located in Chhukha district, the Wangchhu project will operate as a “peaking run-of-river” plant. It is designed to ease Bhutan’s winter power shortages while enabling export of surplus electricity to India during the summer months. “This project will play a critical role in meeting Bhutan’s peak winter demand and strengthening regional energy security,” Adani Power chief executive S.B. Khyalia said after the signing.
The initiative is the first to take shape under the broader partnership inked in May this year between Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop up to 5,000 MW of clean energy in Bhutan. Officials said the Wangchhu deal also fits into Bhutan’s long-term goal of building 15,000 MW of hydropower and 5,000 MW of solar capacity by 2040.
The project, once commissioned, is expected to become a template for further collaborations, deepening India–Bhutan energy ties and adding a fresh push to the Himalayan kingdom’s green growth strategy.
