Trump-Modi: Trade Barriers in Focus as India-US Negotiations Continue
PM Modi’s Assurance: No Compromise on Farmers, Livelihoods
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism about resolving ongoing trade tensions with the United States after President Donald Trump signaled renewed engagement with India amid the escalating tariff war.
On X, PM Modi emphasized, “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. Our trade negotiations aim to unlock the full potential of this strategic relationship. I look forward to speaking with President Trump soon, as our teams work diligently to conclude discussions at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, on Truth Social, Trump announced continued talks, stating, “India and the United States are working to address trade barriers. I look forward to speaking with my good friend, Prime Minister Modi, confident we will reach a mutually beneficial outcome.”
This conciliatory tone from Trump comes shortly after his trade advisor, Peter Navarro, launched a sharp attack on India’s high tariff policies, dubbing the country the “Maharaja of tariffs” and warning that failure to resolve the issue would not end well.
Despite past tensions, including the US imposing a 25% tariff on Indian exports and penalizing oil purchases from Russia, Modi remained firm. He reiterated that India will protect its farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers, prioritizing national interests while continuing constructive dialogue.
Observers say Modi’s balanced approach and readiness for dialogue could pave the way for a breakthrough in the trade standoff, reassuring that the deep-rooted India-US relationship will endure beyond current disputes.
