Assam: In a landmark push towards energy self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first bamboo-based bio-ethanol refinery today in Assam’s Golaghat district. Highlighting the nation’s vision to reduce dependence on foreign fuels, the PM described the project as a crucial step in advancing India’s renewable energy ambitions.
Addressing a large public gathering during the inauguration, PM Modi emphasized India’s growing prowess in renewable energy, noting the country’s position among the world’s top five solar energy producers. He asserted that the bio-ethanol plant will play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission in the energy sector by utilizing sustainable resources like bamboo.

Alongside the inauguration, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a polypropylene manufacturing unit at the refinery, signaling further industrial development in the region.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for Darrang Medical College, Nursing College, and GNM School in Darrang district, and virtually inaugurated the construction of a new bridge over the Brahmaputra River connecting Guwahati’s Narengi and Darrang’s Kuruwa, as well as the Guwahati Ring Road project.
The event was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Hardeep Singh Puri, among others. After the engagements, the Prime Minister departed for Kolkata from Jorhat Airport.
This milestone marks a key step in India’s sustainable energy future, combining traditional resources with modern technology to reduce fossil fuel reliance.
