Rajnath Singh, Yogi Adityanath Launch India’s Homegrown Missile Production from Lucknow
Lucknow: India achieved a new milestone in defence self-reliance as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly flagged off the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from the newly built BrahMos Aerospace facility in Lucknow on Saturday.
The event marks the beginning of full-scale missile production at the Lucknow unit — the first such facility under the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC). Officials hailed the milestone as a powerful testament to the success of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and India’s growing capability to produce world-class defence technology.

India’s First Indigenous BrahMos Production Hub
Located in Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow, the new BrahMos Integration and Manufacturing Unit has been set up with an investment of around ₹300 crore. Spread over 200 acres, the plant will assemble, integrate, and test the next-generation BrahMos missile systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
According to officials, the facility is designed to produce dozens of missiles annually, significantly strengthening India’s deterrence capabilities. It will cater to all three variants — land, sea, and air-launched BrahMos systems — and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign suppliers.
A Symbol of Defence Self-Reliance
Speaking at the launch, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Lucknow unit symbolises India’s resolve to become a global defence manufacturing hub. “The production of BrahMos missiles from Lucknow is not just a technological achievement but a symbol of our self-confidence. It will strengthen the Armed Forces and create new job opportunities in the region,” he said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath lauded the initiative as a major stride for Uttar Pradesh, noting that the Defence Corridor is rapidly turning the state into a “Defence Manufacturing Powerhouse.”
Strategic and Economic Impact
The new facility will not only boost the operational readiness of the Armed Forces but also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, attract ancillary industries, and spur local entrepreneurship in precision engineering.
Experts say the rollout from Lucknow will decentralize India’s defence production network, making the supply chain more resilient and responsive to national security needs.
What is BrahMos?
The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPOM, is one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles, capable of hitting targets at speeds of Mach 2.8–3.0 with pinpoint accuracy. It can be launched from land, sea, submarines, and aircraft, making it one of the most versatile weapons in India’s arsenal.
A Step Towards the Future
With the Lucknow unit now operational, BrahMos Aerospace is set to expand its production base to meet domestic and export orders. Defence analysts believe this development could turn Lucknow into a global hub for missile integration and assembly, aligning perfectly with India’s vision of becoming a top five defence exporter in the world.
