Tehran/Jerusalem: In a striking escalation of the Middle East conflict, a senior Iranian military figure was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike just hours after warning of an impending “surprise” for Israel.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that its spokesperson, Ali Mohammad Naini, was killed in a pre-dawn strike it denounced as a “criminal and cowardly act” by American and Israeli forces.
The development comes as hostilities between Iran and Israel intensify, with both sides exchanging sharp military and rhetorical blows.
Final Message Turns Ominous
Shortly before the strike, Naini had issued a defiant statement, rejecting claims that Iran’s missile capabilities had been weakened.
He asserted that Iran continues to manufacture missiles despite wartime pressures and maintains sufficient reserves. Describing the programme as being at peak strength, he warned that “surprises” were in store for adversaries, hinting at a more complex and prolonged conflict ahead.
Rebuff to US Claims
Naini also dismissed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had suggested that Iran’s naval strength had been neutralised.
In a direct challenge, he urged Washington to send its naval forces into the Persian Gulf, signaling confidence in Iran’s military readiness despite ongoing strikes.

Within hours of his remarks being circulated by Iranian media, Naini was reported dead in the targeted airstrike—highlighting the fast-moving and high-stakes nature of the confrontation.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Iran’s strategic capabilities have suffered major setbacks.
As the conflict entered its third week, Netanyahu said Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes had been significantly crippled. He added that Israeli operations would continue until these capabilities are fully dismantled.
Portraying Israel as holding the advantage, he described Iran as “severely weakened,” even as tensions across the region continue to mount.
