News Desk: India’s push for defence indigenisation received a major boost as Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) played a key role in the commissioning of INS Taragiri, the fourth stealth frigate under Project 17A, into the Indian Navy on April 3, 2026.
Indigenous Steel Backbone of a Modern Warship
Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the advanced warship incorporates nearly 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel supplied entirely by SAIL. The steel was produced at SAIL’s integrated plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela—highlighting India’s growing capability in manufacturing high-end defence materials.
Strengthening ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
SAIL’s contribution aligns closely with flagship national initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, reinforcing the country’s ambition to reduce dependence on imports in strategic sectors like defence.
The company has a proven track record in supporting indigenous defence projects. It has earlier supplied special steel for key naval assets including INS Vikrant as well as earlier Project 17A frigates—INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri.
A Milestone for Defence Manufacturing
The induction of INS Taragiri marks another milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence production. With indigenous steel forming the backbone of this stealth warship, the development underscores the crucial role of the domestic steel industry in strengthening India’s maritime security and strategic capabilities.
